Greater Energy Cooperation Statement


Building links for global economic development has been the business topic for European Union, Arab-Mashreq countries, Iran and Turkey. The discussion focused on the agreement on the importance of developing additional gas pipelines linking Iraq to Turkey and Iraq to Arab countries.



Although the joint declaration talks about a general agreement on increased cooperation on energy issues, a debate erupted behind the scenes over Turkey's role, the Turkish Daily News learned. The draft for the joint declaration prepared by the Commission referred initially to Turkey's important role as an energy hub within the framework of the projects of cooperation between the European Union and Arab countries. However this wording in the draft received fierce reaction from some Arab countries like Egypt. Egyptian officials objected to the draft and proposed instead to refer to Egypt as the main energy hub in the region, suggesting that they could even reverse the streamline of the gas. The discussions led to deletion of the reference to Turkey as a hub.
